INTRODUCTION

This course will introduce us to operating systems and give us an appreciation how computers are run by them.

BACKGROUND

The Operating System manages all hardware and software components of the computer to enable it perform required tasks.  Thus an operating system (OS) exploits the hardware resources of one or more processors to provide a set of services to system users.  The OS also manages secondary memory and I/O (input/output) devices on behalf of its users.

THE COMPUTER SYSTEM

The computer is made up of the following:

  • The Setup

  • Users

The two together makes the Computer System.

The Computer Setup are the hardware and software parts that make up the whole.

Hardware component include

  • System Unit

    • Arithmetic Logic Unit

    • Central Processing Uint

    • Main Memory

  • Input Devices

    • Keyboard

    • Mouse

    • Scanner

    • Microphone

    • Trackball

    • Touch Screen

  • Output Devices

    • Monitor

    • Printer

    • Plotter

    • Speakers

SOFTWARE

Software is the brain of the computer and are the ones that guides the computer into performing task.  There are two categories of software namely:

  • Operating Software

  • Application Software
